What is kratom, anyway?

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tree in the coffee family native to Southeast Asia, where its leaves have been chewed or brewed as tea for generations. The leaves contain dozens of naturally occurring alkaloids, the best studied being mitragynine.

Most of what you'll find labeled simply "kratom", powders, whole-leaf capsules, or tablets like our MIT line, uses the dried, ground leaf itself, so you get the full alkaloid profile roughly in the ratio nature made it, not just one isolated compound.

Effects and strength vary by leaf strain, growing region, and how a batch is processed, which is why product quality and sourcing matter as much as the label on the bag.

Kratom product formats, explained

Tablets and capsules deliver a pre-measured dose of powdered leaf, which makes them the easiest format to dose consistently, with no scale or bitter taste involved.

Gummies and other flavored formats mask kratom's naturally bitter taste, which is popular with people who can't get past the flavor of raw powder, though flavoring and fillers mean a slightly different serving size per piece.

Extracts and isolates concentrate specific alkaloids out of the leaf, trading the "whole plant" profile for a smaller serving size and a stronger, faster effect.

There's no single "best" format. It mostly comes down to how precisely you want to dose and how strong an effect you're looking for.

Is kratom legal?

Kratom is not a controlled substance under U.S. federal law, but it is not legal everywhere in the U.S. A handful of states restrict or ban it outright, and some counties and cities have their own local ordinances even in states where it's otherwise legal statewide.

The legal landscape also shifts over time as more states pass their own kratom-specific regulations, so a rule that's accurate today can change. Using kratom responsibly

Kratom is a pharmacologically active substance, and like any such substance it deserves some care: start with a low dose, especially the first time you try a new product or format, and see how you respond before taking more.

Kratom products can be habit-forming with regular, heavy use. To lower that risk, use sparingly rather than daily, take regular breaks, and pay attention to whether you're needing more over time to get the same effect: that's a sign to scale back.
